What our guests are saying in our Visitors Book

We had a wonderful holiday – thank you!  The house was lovely and clean, very warm, (maybe too warm) especially with the fab log burner going!  Well equipped kitchen.  We would certainly recommend Maxwelton to our friends.  Finally, thanks so much for the kind gift of wine and wonderful cake!

This beautiful property certainly has the “Wow” factor.  Stunning in every way from the welcome pack with home made cake to the complimentary logs for the wood burner, marvelous bedrooms and a comfortable lounge and views to die for, all seen through those antique binoculars.  Thank you very much for making our stay so memorable.

Another enjoyable week at Maxwelton (our 6th).  Many thanks to Chris and Roger for keeping it so attractive. (August/September 2014)

What a beautiful location for exploring, walks, etc.  We have had a wonderful sunny few days (August 2014)

Although the weather was cold and rainy we had a nice relaxing week.  Beautiful views and fantastic facilities.  The piano was an added bonus, especially for evening entertainment.  Mrs Jackson’s tearooms worth a visit for a full afternoon tea (August 2014)   (NB  Please note the piano is only available when Maxwelton and Bracken are rented together)

What a wonderful place – we loved it.  Excellent facilities, well maintained by Chris and Roger – thank you for the welcome pack, you really know what visitors appreciate.  Our week was filled with lots of visits to interesting places in the local area   (visitors from New Zealand, August 2014)

We have really enjoyed our stay at Maxwelton.  Its position is perfect and the house itself is spacious, clean and well furnished – 3 kids and a dog – we needed the space!  The cake and wine was a lovely touch.  I would definitely recommend Maxwelton to all size groups – thank you!  (August 2014)

You’ve made our stay at Porlock enjoyable.  Maxwelton and Bracken are both very cosy and very clean.  Lovely house and glad this is where we ended up.  It made our stay pleasant and if we come again I know where we will stay.  Thank you! (August 2014)

We’ve really enjoyed our stay at Maxwelton.  We have been coming to Porlock for many many years, this is our first stay at Maxwelton, and the best place we’ve stayed.  We will definitely be back.  Maxwelton is just perfect!  Lovely garden, well equipped (July/August 2014)

Thank you for the welcome pack which was much appreciated.  Maxwelton is very clean and comfortable accommodation, home from home, with great sea views and location.  We have really enjoyed our stay with the fine weather being an added bonus.  Would love to return some time in the future.  (July 2014)

All 4 of us ladies thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, enjoying all the local beauty spots and venturing out several times into the delightful National Park.  The house was absolutely perfect for our stay.  Many thanks (July 2014)

Very comfortable.  Had some lovely walks.  Selworthy via Bossington was our favourite.  We loved Porlock and Porlock Weir, Dunster is worth a visit for forest and beach walks, going home for a rest!  A brilliant week, our dog loved the garden – thank you.  (July 2014)

Thank you – lovely house, lovely views.  House kept beautifully – loved the cake too!  My partner is overwhelmed by its loveliness!  (June 2014)

Thank you for my first wonderful stay at Maxwelton.  I had heard from my son and daughter in law how lovely it was but until you experience it for yourself it is hard to believe.  Your home is beautifully clean and great value.  We had great meals out in Porlock and really enjoyed Lynmouth.  (May 2014)

A brilliant holiday.  (visitors from China on walking holiday, March 2014)

Family had a wonderful time.  We cannot wait to return! (April 2014)

We’ve had a brilliant time in Maxwelton.  Lovely cake, wine was very welcome.  We’ve been coming to Porlock for many years and Maxwelton is the best accommodation we’ve stayed in.  The weather has been very good and we’ve had some wonderful walks.  Thanks to Chris and Roger for looking after us.  Hope to be back next year.  (March/April 2014)

This is our second extended stay at Maxwelton and it is as comfortable and well-equipped as we remembered.  It has given us a wonderful opportunity to catch up with friends and family (visitors from France January/February 2014)

A perfect location and accommodaiton for a family get together – thank you.  So many kind gestures too – cake, wine, Xmas tree and decorations.  Very much appreciated.  Sheet music for carols and a piano provided – excellent!  (Xmas 2013)  (NB Piano is only available for use when both Maxwelton and Bracken are rented together).

What a wonderful stay we’ve had at Maxwelton!  The accommodation is spacious, very well equipped and perfectly positioned.  The welcome pack was lovely and a nice surprise.  I came here regularly on holiday 40 years ago with my family and its been a pleasure to share all my favourite places with my own children.  We hope to return. (October/November 2013)

Our second stay in Maxwelton and just as lovely as the first!  The sweet personal touches were again very welcome – delicious cake, thank you!  We loved the roaring fire in the evening and our 2 year old son really enjoyed the box of toys.  A very kind thought!  No doubt we’ll be back sometime soon (October 2013)

We have had another enjoyable week in Porlock exploring the area on foot and it is so nice to come home to such comfortable accommodation after an energetic day.  Thank you so much Roger and Chris for such a lovely welcome and help during the week.  Our 21 month old grandson particularly enjoyed the car on the patio.  We will definitely book Bracken again as a couple and may bring the family back to Maxwelton. (October 2013)

Here again for the 4th time – still plenty to do and enjoy.  Thanks for everything (August/September 2013)

What a week!  Wonderful weather, accommodation and locality.  It has been most enjoyable and we certainly will consider coming back again as there are so many wonderful places to visit and beautiful scenery.  Thank you for making our stay so comfortable  (July 2013)

We have had a fantastic week in Porlock and surrounding area.  Plenty of woodland walks to pretty villages with a promise of a cream tea at every stop!!  Of course the exceptional weather has made a welcome change too.  Many thanks!  (July 2013)

Thank you for providing such a lovely house for our holiday.  All very comfortable and stylish!  Thanks for the Welcome Pack – it was a greal welcome too!!  Maxwelton can be recommended to anyone – its beautiful.  The Ship at the top has provided several meals, and also The Ship at the bottom!.  (June 2013)

Thank you very much for the cake and wine, they were very welcome after our journey.  This was the first time of visiting Somerset and we have enjoyed every minute of it.  There is so much to do and we have run out of time.  The view from the windows is fantastic, its a dream place to live.  The house was very clean and maintained.  We met Chris the housekeeper who was very kind and helpful and who obviously works hard to keep it clean.  It was home from home and we did not want to leave but we will come back and hopefully bring some of the family with us next time.  Thank you so much   (June 2013)

We had a lovely stay in the cottage.  Thank you very much for the welcoming gifts which we thoroughly enjoyed.  The accommodation was lovely and we particularly enjoyed the views from the dining room window and the easy access to the village.  We would recommend walks to Bossington (lovely picturesque English tea garden and great cliff top walk and shingle beach).  We also had a nice fish and chips at the Bottom Ship Inn at Porlock Weir (very attractive).  If you’ve got young children like us the beach at Minehead is good for a day and there’s an excellent park just up the road next to Porlock church.  (May 2013)

Its our last night of staying at Maxwelton – what a lovely stay we have had.  Having previously stayed in Bracken Apartment we decided to bring our son, his girlfriend, daughter and 2 dogs back for a lovely refreshing week away.  We enjoyed some of the wonderful walks and surrounding area.  The welcome gifts were such a lovely homely touch and very much appreciated.  We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend to anyone who would like a break away – Enjoy!! (May 2013)

Thank you so much once again for letting us stay in your cottages.  We have had a brilliant stay, wish we could stay longer (Easter 2013)

Thank you so much for letting us rent your lovely cottage home for this week.  Both the village and the cottage are beautiful and we cannot tell you how much we enjoyed our stay.  Your hospitality has been so kind and we will no doubt be sharing the name of your cottage with friends.  Thanks again and we hope to return soon! Thank you for such a wonderful stay in this magnificent property, it sincerely has been a fantastic stay for us all.  The accommodation is very comfortable (back bedroom bed is immense!) and the kitchen is equipped with anything you should ever need.  The champagne for New Years Eve was very well received – thank you!  Porlock and Maxwelton are spectacular and I cannot wait to return.  PS Sad to be going home!  (New Year 2012)

Thank you for this lovely place to be. We enjoyed our time here so much! The flat is very well equipped and cosy. The welcome sponge cake fruits, wine and more was marvelous. Porlock itself is lovely, try fish and chips at Piggy in the Middle and the surrounding Exmoor is awesome. We’ve done a lot of hiking (walks in the chains, between Withypool and Tarr Steps, from Porlock to Stoke Pero – all of them very nice! Also went for a ride on those cutie exmoor ponies. We were greeted with a lovely clean home with some really welcoming touches. What a wonderful place to base the whole family for a fantastic holiday. Thank you very much. (Maxwelton August 2012)

We had a lovely time, the welcome was lovely and the Bracken accommodation very clean and comfortable. The Ship is a lovely welcoming place and the meal we had there was very nice; its a lovely town, friendly people and I would recommend people to visit and stay here. Thank you to Mr and Mrs Miles, the fruit, cake and wine added to the experience and the pastries in the local shop – brilliant. Thank you. (Bracken August 2012)

Back for our second week this year – we have enjoyed it all just as much, with the added bonus of dry sunny weather. Thanks for all your efforts which are much appreciated. (Maxwelton Sept 2012)

We had a lovely time in your holiday home and it was a great location for our 1st family holiday – trips to Porlock Weir, Minehead and Woolacombe were balanced out with trips to the local pub. We enjoyed our stay and would come back again. Thanks. (Maxwelton Sept 2012)

A great stay, Bracken is a lovely apartment, clean and comfortable and well situated, very quiet and peaceful, plenty of walking, lots of streams for Pancho. Would highly recommend. Flowers and welcome pack were nice touch. Hope to return. Thank you. (Bracken)

We enjoyed our week in Porlock. Lovely views, clean apartment plus welcome pack with wine and cake – who could ask for more. Eating out so easy, just a short walk to many pubs and restaurants. We both enjoyed the Royal Oak, much more than a pub, home cooked food. (Bracken Sept 2012)

Thank you. We have had a wonderful stay. A real break away from our busy lives in this very comfortable apartment. The walk to Porlock Weir, Horner Woods walk and Dunster village were highlights of the 4 day stay. The Ship Inn can be recommended and an easy stagger home. Your former guests have already commented on the warm welcome of wine, flowers and cake, we would like to confirm a beautiful personal touch. We wish you all the best with future bookings. We will definitely try to return (Bracken 21.2.11)

Maxwelton – what a fabulous cottage, one of the best self catering accommodation we have ever stayed in. From the start of this holiday the lovely cake and other little touches, the beautiful clean cottage, it was just wonderful. The weather was just brilliant, what a real bonus. So much to see and do here. We had a great week so wish it was longer. Thank you so much we shall definitely come again.(September 2011)

Possibly the best accommodation we have had the fortune to stay in. We would love to have had more time here to explore the area. Great views from the kitchen and lounge. A pleasure to come back to each night and situated next to the pub which meant we didn’t have to go far for our entertainment. Very impressed with the cleanliness of the cottage and with all the facilities. Our comments to the housekeeper you do an amazing job. The house is immaculate. (Maxwelton September 2011)

What a lovely base for a last minute holiday. The house is beautifully presented and equipped and the garden very well done. A credit to you and your housekeepers and bodes well for future lettings. We have relaxed well exploring and eating our way around Exmoor and the village. A treat to travel by steam pulled by Tornado. The carnival was also a great start! (Maxwelton September 2011)

We have all had a great time in an excellent location and excellent accommodation. Our only recommendation is larger dinner plates. We will definitely be returning (Maxwelton July 2011)

Thanks very much we have had a lovely time staying in your cottage. The welcome pack was enjoyed by all. This is a lovely area for walking and great after a hard day walking to come back and enjoy a nice rest seated at the top of your garden enjoying a lovely view. Wish we could stay another week but work calls. (Maxwelton)

“We had a great time in Porlock last week and were really pleased with the accommodation (and the Victoria sponge cake), it was a great location and had all of the things we needed plus it was great for our son to have everything on one level and the big garden and patio for him to run around on. Hopefully we will return soon as we only got to see a few of the places we wanted to visit.” (Maxwelton 20.7.11)

Thank you so much for a fantastic little holiday. The goodies on arrival were scrumptious. We had a fabulous few days going to Bossington Hill, Minehead, Lynmouth and Porlock Weir (Twiggys new favourite place). What a beautiful area it is here and we shall take home some treasured memories (Bracken 23.9.10)

A very enjoyable stay – Maxwelton is very comfortable and well equipped. We took the woodland walk to Porlock Weir. Dunster Castle and Dunster were lovely, the shops and tea rooms were so nice we ran out of time to actually go in the castle. Hopefully we will return and complete the castle. Lynton was also a favourite place to walk around with nice shops and cafe bars. We went on the cliff lift and then took a short drive to Watersmeet which was beautiful. If we come back to Somerset we would love to come back to Maxwelton. A big thank you for the welcome cake, wine and flowers. (Maxwelton 27.9.10)
